Five Big Ideas in Teaching for Mastery | NCETM

At Seal, we provide a programme of study based on objectives outlined in the National Curriculum (2014). Our aim is to ensure that pupils progress through the curriculum at a pace that not only challenges them but also ensures they have consolidated and deepened their understanding. We want every pupil to develop a sense of curiosity and love of maths.

We follow a Teaching for Mastery approach, at Seal. This means we believe that all pupils will gain a deep understanding of what is being taught. This approach means that pupils who grasp the concepts quicker are given opportunities to deepen their knowledge and improve their reasoning skills, rather than moving on to new content - this enables pupils to think and talk like mathematicians!

Hook Questions at the start of Maths lessons allow children to work collaboratively and discuss their initial ideas. This helps to promote discussion and ensures that mathematical ideas are introduced in a logical way to support conceptual understanding.

Our marking and feedback in mathematics encourages children to learn from mistakes. Communication between peers and staff should allow the opportunity to both identify and address misconceptions as they occur. Mistakes should be valued as they create an opportunity for discussion and can reveal structures and intricacies that have not yet been thought about

The children also have the opportunity to access online games using their own personal log in - select the link below to take you to the home page for each game:
