What are we learning this term?

Main Experiences

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
Our key question for this term is ‘How can I help others to improve their fitness?’ We have been learning about parts of the body, the senses and why exercise is so important. Using this information, we will be creating and teaching a fitness class to the reception children as well as producing a set of instructions on how to perform the perfect Star Jump, Squat and Push Up! In our writing, we will use full stops, capital letters and finger spaces and will learn how to include time order adverbs.

Hook: We had a very special fitness class with an expert coach. He taught us the scientific names for parts of the body, and we learnt a range of exercises that we can perform to look after our bodies inside and out.

How can you support at home?

Please talk to your child about their learning. Key knowledge that the children need to know is detailed on the launch pages below.

Continue to practice phonics with your child as they are sent home each week and read the Read, Write, Inc text that accompanies this.

Also, can you practice the reading and spelling of the common exception words (red words) with your child throughout the year (see below). Thank you for your support.

Learning Experiences 2023-2024

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes

In this experience we will be learning about the human body. We will begin by learning  to name, identify and describe the functions of body parts. We will then focus on how to keep our bodies healthy through exercising. Using experts and the knowledge we have learnt, we will create an exercise video to help others to keep fit and healthy.

Joe Wicks, one of our experts:

We had to make sure that we were experts, so we persevered to make sure that we were completing our exercises accurately.

Mastermind UK

In this experience we will become experts on the United Kingdom. We will learn about th countries that make up the UK, the seas that surround the UK, the capital cities of the UK and much more. We will then participate in a Mastermind competition, where our specialist subject is the United Kingdom.

We will watch Junior Mastermind to understand what Mastermind was all about:

We played hedgehogs and dolphins to understand what an island was.

Experience 1: Head, shoulders, knees and toes

Key learning:

· Basic parts of the body and how to identify them.

· How parts of the body are associated with each sense.

· The importance of exercise.

· How to answer simple scientific questions in different ways.

· How to use secondary sources to gather information.

· How to use observations to gather information.

· How fitness improves health and wellbeing.

Experience 2: Sensational Seal

In this geography experience the children explored their local area. Hedgehogs learnt how to use simple maps to identify features, use simple directional language, identify the features of the locality and were able to use our focused thinking tool: spider diagram.

Hook

For our hook the children went on a local trip around Seal village, stopping at the church, the barbers, the butchers and the local library!

Outcome

For our outcome, the children created an information video, telling people why they should visit Seal and what there is to see and do.

Experience 3: When I was young

In this History experience, Hedgehogs explored changed throughout their lifetime, learning about key events and how they took place in chronological order.

Hook

For our hook, all of the children bought in a variety of photos that were taken at different stages of their lives. As a class we put these in chronological order.

Outcome

For our outcome, the children wrote a poem of how they have changed throughout their lives. We were then able to share these poems with our parents at our very own poetry recital held at Seal School.

Experience 4: Jingle Bells

In this Music experience, Hedgehogs explored a varity of different percussion instruments, learning about different pulses and tempos, experiencing how differently these instruments could be played.

Hook

For our hook, we watched ‘The Nativity: Danger in the Manger’ to get us excited about performing our own Nativity.

Outcome

For our outcome, the children performed our Nativity to an audience of 200 family and friends! In addition, Hedgehogs also planned and performed our own Music Concert to Butterflies, where we also got to share all of our learnt knowledge.

Experience 5: Patchwork

In this textiles and science experience, children will explore the properties and uses of various materials. They will then apply their learning to design and create a patchwork blanket for one of the farm animals.

Hook

For our hook, we are going to take our blankets up to forest school and read a story by a fire! We will then discuss how our blankets kept us warm and start to investigate the properties of different materials.

Outcome

For our outcome, the children will be applying their knowledge to stitch together pieces of fabric in order to make a class blanket for one of the animals on the farm.

Prep quilt - front | Quilts, Auction projects, Quilting projects

Experience 6: A UK Quiz Quest

In this exciting experience, children will embark on a journey to discover all about the UK! At the end, they’ll put their newfound knowledge to the test in a fun and interactive UK quiz.

Hook

For our hook, we are going to explore the features of the UK by dressing up in the colours of flags (England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland).

Outcome

For our outcome, the children will be taking part in a quiz, where they will get to apply their knowledge in hope to win a prize. The Quiz will take place across all of the school in the Inspire Trust.
